In this series, by utilising the diptych structure, I have tried to move beyond merely capturing the geometric forms of the city and create a mental map of Tehran—a map derived from lived experience and visual contemplation within its fragmented spaces. Each pair of images is taken from different locations, but placed side by side based on a common color or form; this visual simultaneity creates a kind of “mental play.” This play creates an in-between space; a space that does not solely belong to either of the photos, but is a combination of the viewer’s experience, perception, and imagination. In Edward Soja’s words, here the “Third Space” is formed—a place between the physical reality of the city and its mental reflection. The Tehran of this series is a fragmented city, but through the combination of these scattered pieces, a new and unified narrative of it is constructed.
